Abstract

This research work examined the access and utilization of antenatal care cervices for women in Funtua Local Government Area of Katsina State.

Data from the study was obtained from the administration of a semi-structured questionnaire. Majority of the respondents were Christian married women between the ages of 24-34 which also had their first marriage at the age of 20-24 years.

This study also revealed that 86 percent of the respondents have knowledge of antenatal facilities existing in tertiary health care centers. The distance of antenatal facility 29 percent of respondents is less than 2km away from their destination with about 29 percent.

The demand for antenatal care from modern health care providers appears, according to our analysis, significantly determined by economic factors such as the household living standard, the costs for the antenatal care and in particular the costs related to the distance to health care facilities.

Base on findings it is recommended that pregnant women should be offered information based on the available evidence together with support to enable them to make informed decisions about their car.

Introduction

Pregnancy is one of the most important periods in the life of a woman, a family and the society as a whole. Special attention is being paid to antenatal care by the services through Health Care System of countries globally.

The goals of antenatal care are to prevent health problems to both mother and child (Adamu and Salihu, 2002). UNICEF (2003), extended antenatal care is a significant period for pregnant women in area of interventions, information and the fostering of their health, well-being and survival of their infants.

Antenatal care is generally aimed at providing adequate healthcare for both the mother and baby at the end of any pregnancy. Pregnancy itself is always a risk to the mother and there are so many things that can go wrong.

Evidence suggests that maternal mortality occurs happen because of complications during pregnancy and delivery. Thus, it has been suggested that antenatal care could play a role in reducing maternal mortality and that it could ensure that pregnant women delivered with the assistance of skilled attendant (Anna et al, 2005 and UNICEF, 2011).

The Global Demographic and Health Survey Compiler estimated that 500,000 women die each year from pregnancy related complications (NPC and ICF Macro, 2009). About 55,000 of these deaths occur in Nigeria. Nigeria, with only 2% of the world’s population accounts for over 10% of the global maternal deaths.
