Introduction

Agriculture is an important channel for encouraging growth in developing countries. The World Bank (2007) observed that 9% growth increase in agriculture result in increase in income of the poorest by twice as much as the same investment in the service (Peacock, 2004). According to Moncumill (2006), the world population is expected to continue increasing into 21st century.

There is noticeable food scarcity and food insecurity and a growing concern about feeding a large number of people, many of whom have no permanent employment and have limited access to resources (Todaro and Smith, 2006).

Agriculture has over the years been the largest employer of labour in Nigeria. About 70% of workers in Nigeria were in agriculture in 1996 and this had fallen to only 60% by 2009 (Adedeji, Sheu and Dietrich, 2013).

The rate of growth of Nigeria’s food production is 2.5% per annum recently, while food demand has been growing at the rate of more than 3.5% per annum due to 2.85% growth rate of population (Kolawale and Ojo, 2007).

In Nigeria, apart from socio-economic problems facing Nigerian farmers, there is also effect of climate change which can be seen with incessant flood disaster witnessed in the recent years in some part of the country.
