Introduction

1.1 Background of the Study

Terminal illness is an incurable disease that cannot be adequately treated and is reasonably expected to result in the death of the patient within a short period of time regardless the intervention given.

This term is more commonly used for a progressive disease such as cancer or advanced heart disorder than for trauma.

However, some kinds of medical treatments maybe appropriate such as treatment to reduce pain or ease breathing.

Some terminally in patients stop all debilitating treatment to reduce unwanted side effects. A common symptom that many terminal patient experience is dyspnea, or difficulty with breathing.

Some patient view terminal illness management or treatment as being aggressive in the hope of an expected success. Still, others reject conventional medical treatment and pursue unproven treatments such as radical dietary modifications.

Speaking about dying to those who are near death is challenging for even the most talented and experience nurse (Gautheir 2008).

However, the care of terminally ill patient is a challenge for nurse that has raised special interest in recent years. It is believed that nurse’s positive attitude has the potential to affect the patient’s health in an encouraging manner (Bacrach and Lindstorm, 2008.)
