Abstract

This study took critical examination and evaluation of the Ebonyi State Community Based Poverty Reduction Agency and youth skill acquisition in Ebonyi State from 2005 to 2015.

The study aimed broadly at establishing relationship between EBCPRC and poverty alleviation in the rural communities of Ebonyi State and specifically ascertaining whether the management of EBCPRA’s fund encouraged the provision of skill acquisition centres in Ebonyi State from 2005 to 2015.

The structural-functional theory was our explanatory guide in the work. The descriptive survey method was adopted to elicit data from a targeted population through questionnaire and statistically analyzed.

Primary and secondary data was used. Logical conclusions was made based on the fact that the hypotheses tested was accepted.

Finally, recommendations was made as: The donor agencies, international organizations, government and non-governmental organizations should not relent in funding EBCPRA so as to ensure a total eradication of poverty in Ebonyi State.

Introduction

Nigeria with the population of about 170 million are predominantly poor with the percentage of about 65% living in abject poverty (NBS, 2010). The poor populace are

predominantly the rural dwellers, and this informs the major reasons for the rural-urban migration in Nigeria, which poses some challenges to the development and administration of the metropolitan government (Nkwede, 2014).

Rural areas in Nigeria are known to have accounted for about 80% of foreign exchange earnings and 70% of government revenues (UNDP, 2008).

But it is unfortunate that rural areas in Nigeria have been bedeviled with untold hardship, endemic poverty and protracted squalor, with its consequent side effect on national planning and development (UNDP, 2008)
