Abstract

The purpose of this study was to establish the impact of child labour on the behaviour of adolescents in Kaduna State, Nigeria. Four objectives were stated and four research questions were raised. The objectives were set for the study along with four research questions. Four hypotheses were also postulated for the study.

A sample of 250 house helps and 250 employers of house helps was drawn from a population of 4,179 house helps and their employers. Questionnaire was used to obtain data for the study. Descriptive statistics of frequency, mean, standard Deviation along with Spearman Rho correlation test were employed to analyse the data.

Results indicated that adolescent househelps are often treated as second class citizens. Most adolescents are also found to prefer living with their parents instead of living with their employers. Findings further showed that most adolescent house helps are sometimes abused physically, socially and emotionally.

Introduction

In Nigeria child labour does mostly occur in semi-formal and informal businesses with hundreds of thousands of house helps mainly working for prosperous urban families. Steid (1998) stated that House help could be needed in areas such as childcare, laundry work, general house help, serving and babysitting.

He further expatiated that, house help can be obtained from a variety of sources like, within the family or in the neighborhood. Okoye (1999) stated that, house helps are part and parcel of the domestic life. Their services are indispensable especially to the working class women who find it difficult to combine their domestic work with their jobs.

House helps participate in such activities as taking care of children, washing of clothes, house cleaning and going for shopping for the family. As adolescents grow older into their teens (adolescence period) their emotions become more specific. They show joy, anger, fear, curiosity, jealousy and affection.
