Abstract

The stems, leaves and petals(flowers) of Ipomea involucrata P. Beauv. were screened for their phytochemical constituents, nutritional and anti-nutrient properties. The phytochemical analysis of the plant parts revealed the presence of saponins, tannins, flavonoids, alkanoids, anthraquinones, terpenes and cardiac glycosides.

Alkaloids, tannins, terpenes, cardiac glycosides and anthraquinones were present in all the plant parts. Proximate estimations of the plant parts revealed the moisture content, total ash, crude protein, lipids, crude fibre and carbohydrate values.

The anti-nutrient estimations also revealed the plants hydrogen cyanide content, total oxalate value, soluble oxalate value, tannins/ tannic acid, phytate content and nitrogen value.

This work shows the bioactive plant compound present in Ipomoea involucrata thereby showing its relevance and effectiveness as a traditional medicine (medicinal plant).

Introduction

1.1 Background of the Study

The practice of traditional medicine using medicinal plants has a long history in many cultures. This type of health care can be described as herbalism or botanical medicine.

The growing sophistication in lifestyle among world population makes it imperative to refer to herbal practice as alternative or complementary medicine, to appeal to a cross section of people irrespective of their cultural affiliation.

Ethnobotanical survey is an important step in the identification, selection and development of therapeutic agents for medicinal plants. The approach of retrieval of information on the folk use of plants often yields more potentially useful compounds than empirical approach (Carvalho et al., 1991, Berlin et al., 1994).

This type of herbal practice is gaining increasing attention. Two-thirds of the world’s population (mainly in developing counties) relies entirely on such traditional medicinal therapies as their primary form of health care.

Medicinal plants are the richest bio-resource of drugs of traditional systems of medicine, modern medicines, nutraceuticals, food supplements, folk medicine, pharmaceutical intermediates and chemical entities for synthetic drugs (Ncube et al., 2008).

The use of traditional medicine is important for the treatment and management of a number of diseases on the African continent, as a lack of basic health care and medical personnel makes it difficult to treat rural populations.

Medicinal plants will be the best source to obtain a variety of drugs. Therefore, such plants should be investigated for better understanding of their properties, safety and efficacy (Mohammed et al., 2011)
