Introduction

There are differing definitions of health and illness, the major one is based on a biomedical model. This model describes disease as a deviation from a biological norm. Disease is perceived as a discrete entity, independent of the social content in which it occurs.

The biomedical model has been criticized for presenting too narrow a picture of health and illness. The ecological approach looks at a variety of elements that bring about ill health such as environmental, socio-economic, physiological and psychological factors.

On the other hand, sociological approaches suggest that the only way to understand health and illness is to place them within social, political and historical circumstances.

Catalano (1979) noted that the individual is not limited to physical suffering, but also has social, emotional and psychological problems, some of which are present even before the illness is manifested.

Health indicates a person’s ability to function in fullest and most positive way. Morris (1994) stated that both health and illness vary across times and cultures.
