Abstract

The study examined strategic evangelism in the twenty- first century in the Redeemed Christian Church of God (Abundant Mega Parish) in Uyo Local Government Area of Akwa Ibom State. Evangelism is a great commend to all followers of Christ but Christians are nowhere to be found in this area.

It is quite unfortunate that Christians lack the understanding that it is an avenue to bring the lost souls to the body of Christ. Relevant literatures were reviewed. A non- experimental descriptive survey was used.

The design was chosen because the study involves human beings and the situation is needed to be described as it was. Structured questionnaire with close ending questions was used for data collection.

The questionnaire comprises of Section A and B. section A for Socio- demographic data for the respondents and B for questions that elicit responses convenient sampling techniques was used to select one hundred respondents. Data was analyzed using descriptive analysis of frequency tables and percentages.

Findings revealed that 84 (84%) of the respondents have been evangelizing though not effectively. Based on the results, level of awareness on evangelism is high compare to the degree of practice.

Christians lack those strategic measures like- tract sharing, street preaching evangelism and even the conversational evangelism which our Lord Jesus Himself was effectively involved in. factors like prayer, seeking for the Holy Spirit and personal evangelism training were found to facilitate the practice of evangelism in the church.

It was recommended that leaders in the church should organize training on personal evangelism and Christians should adopt all the strategies of evangelism so as to reach the last souls.

The researcher suggested that a research in the topic should be conducted in other churches in Uyo and all the Local Government Area of Akwa Ibom State.

1.1 Background of the Study

Evangelism is an aspect of Christianity which has to do with the spread of the gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ. Evangelism according to the Bible Mark 16:15-16 (K.J.V).

And he said unto them, Go ye into all the world, and preach the gospel to every creature. He that believeth and is baptized shall be saved; but he that believeth not shall be damned. It is the great commission. It is important because Jesus instructed us to do it.

At its core, the great commission, evangelism is sharing the good news of salvation, forgiveness, and grace without those things, we would all be lost without hope, without a Savior and would have to endure the consequences of sin death according to (Group Ministry, 2016).

According to Brian Parks (2012), Evangelism helps the gospel central in our lives and churches. It also deepens our understanding of the most fundamental truths of scripture.

Most church members sometimes wonder if they should just leave evangelism to the “professionals”. After all, isn’t evangelism a spiritual gift? The command is given to all followers of Christ. In churches today, there are various groups for different mission. For example, the care group and the group for evangelism.

That is to say that the role/function of the members is limited. As a result, the zeal for evangelism will be weakened in the lives of the members. The people will now be deprived of their inheritance in Christ Jesus, for the bible says that he that winneth souls is wise.
