Abstract<\/strong><\/h3>\n

Urinary schistosomiasis though being second to malaria as the most economically devastating disease is highly neglected in Nigeria. In fact it was only in 2010 that it\u00a0 was introduced into the Integrated Disease Surveillance and Response (IDSR).<\/p>\n

This\u00a0 has made the control of the disease more challenging despite its known high endemicity in the country. Several studies have shown that the disease can lead to\u00a0 some dangerous complications ranging from gross mental retardation in children to renal complications such as bladder cancer.<\/p>\n

In Enugu state haematuria is a common complaint in many communities. However, the only attempt\u00a0 to\u00a0 study\u00a0 and\u00a0 characterize the disease was in a focal community as far back as in 1989.<\/p>\n

No attempt has been made to establish the burden in the state or determine the factors that predispose to the infection and other associated complications.<\/p>\n

We carried out a cross-sectional survey of\u00a0 primary school\u00a0 children between the ages of 5-15years who were randomly selected through a multi stage sampling method\u00a0 using WHO guidelines for schistosomiasis surveys.<\/p>\n

1.1 Background of the Study<\/strong><\/p>\n

Schistosomiasis otherwise called bilharzia or bilharziosis or snail fever is a neglected tropical disease caused by a trematode of the genus schistosoma. It is one of the major public health problems facing developing countries.<\/p>\n

School-aged children are at the greatest risk especially within teenage and boys are more affected than girls1<\/sup>. Infection is mostly found in Asia, Africa and South America in areas where the water contains fresh-water snails that carry the parasite.<\/p>\n

Globally, over 600million people are at risk with over 200million infections in 74-76 countries. An estimated 20million people come down with the disease following infection and it is estimated that about 20,000 deaths are attributed to the disease annually2<\/sup>.<\/p>\n

Africa accounts for over 85% of the burden and it is estimated that over 477million persons are at risk in the continent.<\/p>\n

Nigeria is the most endemic country in the world for urinary schistosomiasis with over 101.83 million people being at risk and an estimated 25.83million people infected<\/p>\n
