Abstract<\/strong><\/h3>\n

The studies of mammalian chromosomes have constituted an effective area of investigation to explain their relationship. <\/span>The entire chromosome set of a species is known as a karyotype. Many rodent species show a tendency for extensive chromosomal variability within species and species complexes. <\/span><\/p>\n

The use of molecular methods to provide more insight into the taxonomy and phylogeny of\u00a0<\/span>Cricetomys<\/span> was recommended.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>Karyotypic studies were carried out on the African Giant rat, (<\/span>Cricetomys<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>gambianus<\/span>, Waterhouse-1840) with the aim of determining its chromosome number, length, centromeric indices and nomenclature.<\/span><\/p>\n

The chromosomes were prepared from the conventional bone marrow of 10 African Giant rats – five male and five female Giant rats, treated intraperitoneally with 2 ml of 0.04%\u00a0<\/span>colchicines<\/span>\u00a0for 3 hours. <\/span><\/p>\n

Chromosomes in well-spread cells were counted and measured using\u00a0<\/span>KaryoType<\/span>\u00a0computer software. Arm lengths, centromeric indices and nomenclature were determined from these measurements and were expressed in\u00a0<\/span>micrometre<\/span>\u00a0(\u00b5m). <\/span><\/p>\n

1.1 Background of the Study<\/strong><\/p>\n

The African Giant rat (AGR) also known as Gambian pouched rat belongs to the order Rodentia, Suborder\u00a0<\/span>Myomorpha<\/span>, family\u00a0<\/span>Cricetidae<\/span>, subfamily\u00a0<\/span>Cricetomyiane<\/span>\u00a0and genus\u00a0<\/span>Cricetomys<\/span>\u00a0(Delany and Happold, 1979). It is a wild rodent consumed by the rural population in Nigeria. <\/span><\/p>\n

Two species have been recorded in Nigeria,\u00a0<\/span>Cricetomys<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>emni<\/span>\u00a0and\u00a0<\/span>Cricetomys<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>gambianus<\/span>, Waterhouse-1840 (Happold, 1987). <\/span>Other Gambian species exist in South Africa and they include\u00a0<\/span>Cricetomys<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>gambianus<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>adventor<\/span>, C.\u00a0<\/span>gambianus<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>selindensis<\/span>\u00a0and C.\u00a0<\/span>gambianus<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>cunator<\/span>.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Cricetomys<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>emni<\/span>\u00a0is distributed naturally in the rain forest zone and is not associated with human habitation. It is less common than the Gambian Giant rat (Happold, 1987).<\/span><\/p>\n

African giant pouched rat is found throughout tropical and subtropical Africa, South of the\u00a0Sahara Desert\u00a0down to about 27o South latitude (Novak, 2009). <\/span><\/p>\n

Their native range stretches from the Atlantic Ocean coast of West Africa, east across the Congo Basin to the Indian Ocean Coast of East Africa (Peterson et al., 2006) and southwards into the Transvaal and KwaZulu-Natal Provinces of South Africa (<\/span>Malekani<\/span>\u00a0et al., 2002). <\/span><\/p>\n
