Abstract<\/b><\/span><\/h2>\n

This study aimed to examine the diversity of yeasts and coliforms associated with bovine subclinical mastitis in\u00a0<\/span>periurban<\/span>\u00a0dairy farms in Kaduna Metropolis, Kaduna State, Nigeria, including the use of\u00a0molecular techniques<\/em>.<\/span><\/p>\n

A cross-sectional study was conducted on twenty-six dairy farms drawn from four local government areas in the state. A total of 300 composite milk samples were collected from 300 cows-in-milking and examined.<\/span><\/p>\n

The result shows that: 37 (12.3%) fungal isolates were identified using the API 20C AUX as; (9) Candida albicans, (4) Candida\u00a0<\/span>famata<\/span>, (4) Candida\u00a0<\/span>krusei<\/span>, (1) Candida\u00a0<\/span>boidinii<\/span>, (1) Candida\u00a0<\/span>pelliculosa<\/span>,(1) Candida\u00a0<\/span>lusitaniae<\/span>,(5)\u00a0<\/span>Trichosporon<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>mucoides<\/span>, (1)Cryptococcus\u00a0<\/span>humicola<\/span>,<\/span><\/p>\n

Introduction<\/span><\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/h2>\n

Bovine mastitis is the inflammatory response of the udder to noxious agents that can be either infectious or non-infectious characterized by pathological alterations in mammary tissues, compositional changes in milk,\u00a0elevated milk somatic cells<\/em>, and pain to the affected animal resulting in reductions of milk yield and quality (<\/span>Matofari<\/span>\u00a0et al., 2005;\u00a0<\/span>Radostits<\/span>\u00a0et al., 2007).<\/span><\/p>\n

Most frequently the\u00a0<\/span>etiology<\/span>\u00a0is\u00a0infectious and organisms<\/em>\u00a0as\u00a0diverse as bacteria<\/em>,\u00a0mycoplasmas<\/em>, yeasts, and algae have been implicated (Smith and Hogan, 2001; Krukowski et al., 2006; Kivaria and\u00a0<\/span>Noordhuizen<\/span>, 2007).<\/span><\/p>\n

Bovine mycotic mastitis is usually caused by yeasts, but mastitis due to filamentous fungi mostly Aspergillus fumigatus has been reported (<\/span>LasHeras<\/span>\u00a0et al., 2000).<\/span><\/p>\n
