Cooperatives as voluntary social organizations have profound influence on socio-economic development all over the world.<\/span><\/p>\n

It empowers members to participate actively in meaningful business ventures, improved living condition, creating job opportunities, improved managerial skills and increase agricultural productivity. <\/span><\/p>\n

The study aimed at assessing the influence of the farmers\u2019 cooperatives on agricultural development in Kwali Area Council, Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Abuja, Nigeria.<\/span><\/p>\n

Moreover, it investigated the socio-economic status of the cooperatives, the reason for joining cooperatives, the attitude of the members and the constraints facing the cooperatives in the study area.<\/span><\/p>\n

Primary data were generated through the administration of 280 well-structured questionnaire by employing a purposive sampling technique. Focus group discussion (FGD) was adopted to collect data from relevant groups in order to supplement data generated from the questionnaire survey. <\/span><\/p>\n

The secondary data were generated from official gazettes, research reports, journals, text-books and online materials. Descriptive statistical technique was employed to summarize the data into tabular forms and calculation of the frequency, percentages, and averages.<\/span><\/p>\n

In addition, inferential technique such as the multiple regression was used to measure the degree of relationship between the farmers\u2019 cooperatives and agricultural development.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

1.1 Background of the Study<\/strong><\/p>\n

Agriculture accounts for about 20 percent of GDP in the West African sub-region (World Bank, 2005); two thirds of the people derive livelihoods and 40 per cent of exports commodities come from this sector (World Bank, 2000).<\/span><\/p>\n

Despite the importance of the agricultural sector, its performance over the last 30 years has been disappointing: agricultural and food production per capita in West Africa has stagnated in the last ten years (FAO, 2005), yield of grain crops are less than half those of other developing regions in Asia and South America. <\/span><\/p>\n

If Africa is to feed itself, lift its people out of poverty and attain a satisfactory level of sustainable growth, the poor performance of its agricultural sector must be addressed. It is the dominant sector in the rural areas of Nigeria as it provides employment for about 60 percent of the work force (<\/span>Manyong<\/span>, et al 2005). <\/span><\/p>\n

For instance, less than 50% of the country\u2019s cultivable agricultural land is under cultivation particularly because smallholder and farmers who use rudimentary production techniques cultivate most of this land with resultant low yields. <\/span><\/p>\n

The smallholder farmers are constrained by many problems including those of poor access to modern inputs and credit, poor infrastructure, inadequate access to markets, land and environmental degradation, and inadequate research and extension services (<\/span>Oluwatayo<\/span>, et al 2008). <\/span><\/p>\n

In an effort to overcome some of these issues, donor agencies and governments have reemphasized cooperatives as a strategy to promote collective action to strengthen small holders\u2019 livelihoods by linking them to national and international markets.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
