Abstract

The study was focused on the challenges of women involved in aquacultural activities in Anambra-east local government, otuocha community. The study examines the strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats of the stated women, also thier roles and operations were analysed.

This study however revealed thier constraints to be financial constraint, basic amenities, health issues, fluctuating sales and demand, competition/dues , lack of modernized processing equipment, land tenure system, low literacy and training, high indebtedness and family responsibilities.

Further findings of the study revealed the respondent SWOT denoting strength which include: Population of the women, skills and experience, diversity of fishes in otuocha community, availability of natural water body, low production cost, gender equality in the study area.

Thier weakness include: health challenges, land tenure system biases, lack of processing equipment, lack of capital, high degree of Indebtedness, family responsibilities. However thier opportunity include: producers of successors, presence of fisheries organization.

Large market for the production of fish, creation of value added fish product, geographical location of the community and market, limited opposition from the male gender, location of the water body.

Also thier threats include: competition from other women fisherfolks, fluctuating no of customers, acquiring of land by only male gender, lack of modernized processing equipment, cultural/traditional forces limiting women from active fishing and flooding.

Introduction

1.1 Background of the Study

The Fisheries subsector is a significant source of fish food and livelihood for many people living in the coastal communities as it supplies animal protein necessary for growth and income.

However, it has become clear that the challenges women are facing needs to be addressed and evaluated at their various levels.

There is enormous need to study the challenges of artisanal women fisherfolks as they are regarded as the backbone of aquaculture.

The engagement of women is particularly in coastal communities as women represent almost 50% of the total workforce engaged in fisheries around the world though have been generally overlooked in marine conservation and fisheries management in developing countries (Robinson, 2000).
