Abstract

This study was designed to examine the Influence of Modern Information Technology (MIT) Devices Usage on Family Interaction in Adamawa State. In this study, six objectives were raised and six research questions were answered, four null hypotheses were formulated.

Survey research design was adopted. Population for the study was 6,108 staff and their children in tertiary institutions. A purposive sampling technique was used with a sample frame of five hundred (500) adults (parents) and children. In one hundred and twenty five (125) households.

The instrument used for data collection was questionnaire. The data collected were statistically analyzed using frequencies and percentages for the demographic data, mean and standard deviation for the research questions while Pearson Product Moment Correlation (PPMC) statistics was used to measure the significant relationship between the variables.

The four null hypotheses were statistically tested at a significant level of 0.05 and it was observed that all four null hypotheses were rejected.

This revealed that significant relationships existed between the influence of Modern Information Technology devices and family interactions and parents’ action towards socialization of their children.

The findings revealed that MIT devices usage could positively influence interaction among family members, they could also influence family togetherness, communication, as well as how parents socialize their children positively despite the presence of these devices in their homes.

To summarize all these, both research questions and hypotheses showed that significant relationship exist between each of these variables and the use of modern information technology devices by the family members.

Based on the findings, it was recommended that MIT devices should be found in every home, in order to encourage family time together and improve communication between members.

Introduction

1.1 Background of the Study

The family today benefits from the modern information technology devices. Through these devices such as cabled television, personal computer, cell phone (handset) and the internet, the family can watch and be connected to other parts of the world without physically being there.

Families can interact with one another within and outside the home without any barrier. As good as these devices are, they have their other side effects on the family. There is a general public perception that MIT devices have both negative and positive influence on the family.

Pope John Paul II, (1994) and Hildebrand, (1997) are of the view that MIT devices can enrich family life, as it draws them closer together. On the other hand, MIT can harm family life as it can isolate family members in their private world, cutting them off from authentic interpersonal relationships.

Nataraja, (2008) indicated that modern information technology (MIT) is a network that is sophisticated enough to meet the demands of modern communication.

It is the present means of communication between individuals. He further explained that, from ancient writing techniques and newspapers, we have moved on to e-mail and text massages.
