About Unity Schools in Nigeria

The history of unity schools in Nigeria began in 1966, under the leadership of the then-Nigerian Prime Minister, Alhaji Abubakar Tafawa Balewa, when it was discovered that most of the problems in Government and Parliament were caused by mistrust and ignorance of the backgrounds of those governing the new Nation.

In the former three areas of East, North, and West, the Federal Government decided to build what were then known as “Inter Regional Secondary Schools,” and afterwards called Federal Government Colleges. There are now unity schools in Lagos, Abuja, and nearly every one of Nigeria’s present 36 states.

In Nigeria, admission to unity schools is through a national common entrance examination administered by the National Examination Council (NECO). The federal government of Nigeria subsidizes the fees of Unity schools.
