Universities in Edo State

Edo State is one of Nigeria’s 36 states, in the country’s southern region. Also, the state was listed as Nigeria’s 24th most populous state (3,233,366) in the 2006 National Population Census.

Federal University in Edo State

1. University of Benin

The University of Benin, formerly known as the Institute of Technology, laid its foundation in 1970. The university has two campuses: the Ugbowo campus, which houses over five faculties, and the Ekehuan campus, which houses undergraduate and graduate students studying theatrical arts.

In addition, the University of Benin College of Medical Sciences has three schools: the school of medicine, which was founded in 1973 and offers a 6-year programme in medicine and surgery.

However, the School of Basic Medical Science laid its foundation in 2003 from the College of Medical Sciences. 

Also, the school of basic medical science officially opened in January 2004. Interestingly, it offers undergraduate B.Sc. programmes, and the School of Dentistry, which was founded in 1976 and admitted its first class of students in the 1976/77 academic year. 

Meanwhile, since its founding, the University of Benin has produced outstanding graduates federal universities.

State Universities in Edo State

2. Edo University, Iyamu

Edo State University is a government-owned university in Edo State. Early in 2016, the university laid its foundation.

Also, Edo state university has no religious affiliation, making it a culturally diverse institution. Unlike other state universities, Edo state university school fees [N600,000 – N700,000] are quite high, offering far more than any other state university in Nigeria. 

Interestingly, Bachelor’s degrees are available in Engineering, Science and Technology, Arts, Management, and Social Sciences at the university.

In addition, the university has a small population at the time of writing, therefore chances of admission will not be as competitive. The university provides housing for its students.

3. Ambrose Alli University (AAU)

Ambrose Alli University is a state-owned university in Edo State, Nigeria’s south-central region. The institution laid its foundation in 1981 and was named in honour of a professor. 

The University aims to help Nigeria grow and prosper by bringing in professionals in research and development and providing high-quality education to its students. 

Also, the institution is non-denominational and admits students from all walks of life in Nigeria, resulting in a varied student body.

In addition, bachelor’s and master’s degrees are available in a variety of fields, including education, law, engineering, science, technology, agriculture, arts, management, and social sciences

Also, Ambrose Alli University has a large student and faculty population, and admittance is quite demanding. The university also accommodates her students.

One reason for the university’s high student population is its low tuition [N100,000 – N200,000].

Private Universities in Edo State

4. Igbinedion University, Okada (IUO)

Igbinedion University is the first private university in Benin city. The University laid its foundation in 1999. The founder is Sir Gabriel Osawaru Igbinedion CFR, a business owner, philanthropist, and notable Benin Chief. 

Furthermore, there are around 5000 students enrolled at the university. Also, graduate and undergraduate programmes are available at Igbinedion University

In addition, the College of Law, College of Health Sciences, College of Natural and Applied Sciences, College of Business and Management Studies, College of Pharmacy, College of Engineering, and College of Arts and Social Sciences are the seven colleges that make up the university.

5. Benson Idahosa University (BIU)

Benson Idahosa University is a private Christian university in Edo State, southwest Nigeria. Also, the school named was in honour of Archbishop Benson Idahoan, a well-known pastor in the state.

However, the National Universities Commission of Nigeria approved Benson Idahosa University in 2002.

In addition, the university provides a variety of degree programmes at various levels in Agriculture, Law, sciences, arts, management, and Social Science.

Interestingly, in all editions of the Nigerian Private Universities Games, Nigerian Universities Games, and West African Universities Games, BIU has consistently outperformed other Nigerian private universities in sports.

Meanwhile, the students come from all around the country, although most of them are Christians. This university has a competitive admissions process. It has a student-to-teacher ratio of roughly 10:1.

Additionally, the school fees of Benson Idahosa University range from N800,000 to N900,000 and the university provides housing for its students.

6. Samuel Adegboyega University (SAU)

Samuel Adegboyega University (SAU) is a private university in Ogwa local government of Edo State, Nigeria. Also, the Apostolic Church Nigeria named the school after Pastor Samuel Adegboyega.  

However, the university got accredited in August 2015 after failing to meet the National Universities Commission‘s requirements.

The National Universities Commission approved 13 postgraduate programmes for Samuel Adegboyega University on August 31, 2018.

7. Wellspring University

Wellspring Institution is a private university that laid its foundation in 2009. Also, the National University Commission accredits it. 

The university lies in Edo state, in southern Nigeria, near states such as Delta and Ondo. Wellspring University is a private, non-profit educational institution.

The university prepares students to be tomorrow’s leaders, addressing Nigeria’s social and economic issues.

In addition, in terms of religion and cultural background, the university’s student community is fairly diversified.

Meanwhile, students can enrol in courses in the sciences, arts, management, and social sciences at Wellspring University.

Wellspring University’s school tuition range from N100,000 to N200,000, and admission is not as competitive as it is at federal and state institutions. 

Also, the institution provides housing for its students, as well as a library and excellent college facilities. The university has a strict code of conduct.
